Messenger of the hidden human stories

Str[eat] more often.

Str[eat] more often.

Melbourne has two new cafes.

I could probably post these words every day at the rate Melbournes cafe culture is booming, however these cafe’s are  the epitome of the way small business can improve the wellbeing of a comunity through social enterprise.

Streat is a pretty simple concept. Mobile food and coffee shops that employ the homeless and unemployed, where 100% of the profits raised are put straight back into the homeless, whilst teaching the employees valuable skills that can be used to get a fresh start.

Founded by Rebecca Scott and Kate Barrelle in 2010, it was an idea first sparked in 2008, that took 3 years to finally get started, where they have quickly expanded from one to two venues in Melbourne Central, Melbourne and Melbourne University.

Rebecca and Kate were inspired by the ability of hawkers within South-East Asia to deliver the most amazing street food dishes from very basic, portable equipment, which used as a starting point to develop their mobile street cafes.

This has so far proven to be a good combination for tacking one of societies toughest challenges, and giving some of Melbournes battlers, a fantastic chance to get their ball rolling.

We wish them the best of luck.
